Saint Sophie Cathedral

Hagia Sophia Museum, Ayasofya Müzesi, Hagia Sophia
Turkey, Istanbul
Hagia Sophia - the Wisdom of God, Hagia Sophia of Constantinople, Hagia Sophia - a former patriarchal Orthodox cathedral, later a mosque, now a museum; the world-famous monument of Byzantine architecture, a symbol of the "golden age" of Byzantium. The official name of the monument today is the Hagia Sophia Museum.
During the Byzantine Empire, the cathedral was located in the center of Constantinople next to the imperial palace. Currently located in the historical center of Istanbul, Sultanahmet district. After the capture of the city by the Ottomans, the Sofia Cathedral was turned into a mosque, and in 1935 it acquired the status of a museum. In 1985, the Hagia Sophia, among other monuments of the historical center of Istanbul, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
For more than a thousand years, St. Sophia Cathedral in Constantinople remained the largest church in the Christian world - until the construction of St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome. The height of the St. Sophia Cathedral is 55.6 meters, the diameter of the dome is 31 meters.

I don't like it when the "picture looks like a tourist". When everything is faked and embellished. Yes, earlier this mosque had a cult significance. But now it appears as a landmark, as a museum. In it, I did not feel the crazy energy and atmosphere of that time. Perhaps this was influenced by a kilometer queue and crowds of selfie lovers. I recommend that you visit the functioning mosques of Istanbul, where locals go.

The cathedral is truly amazing! Scale, decoration, but most importantly, how Christian and Muslim details are intertwined in one place, various building materials, and the history of this place as a whole. I think that it is definitely worth a visit, but there is a small correction, the main hall is now undergoing reconstruction and scaffolding is beautifully located in the middle (

When they say “the largest” or “the most ancient”, they involuntarily push for comparison, disputes and the desire to refute. What is Hagia Sophia compared to? Perhaps, only with St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, and, of course, she will lose such a comparison, both in size and beauty, and even more so in spirituality. Many thanks to the Turks for not razing the Christian temple to the ground, but only completing the minarets. Christians, I think, in a similar situation would not think and would sort it out quickly.
